Andrew Wiley was later identified as the suspect wanted for a hit-and-run at the Upper Merion mall on Sunday, Dec. 18 around 2:30 p.m., Montgomery County Prosecutor Kevin Steele said.
An Upper Merion bike officer responded to the scene where the suspect vehicle, a red Nissan Juke, fled the parking deck and tried to leave the mall near the Season 52, where the vehicle became stuck in traffic, authorities said.
That's when the car drove off a 4-foot stone wall and became disabled, local police said. Wiley got out of the car and fired a 9mm handgun at the officer approaching on foot, who fired back and shot the suspect twice, hitting him in the ankle and and thigh.
Multiple fired cartridge casings were recovered at the crime scene, and the 9 mm Glock-type firearm was recovered from Wiley. It was not branded with a serial number and appears to be a “ghost gun.”
Wiley was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, Assault of Law Enforcement Officer, Aggravated Assault, Firearm Not to be Carried Without a License, Recklessly Endangering Another Person and other related charges.
He was released from the hospital and is awaiting arraignment at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility. A preliminary hearing will be scheduled at the time of arraignment.
